"The goal of autonomic computing is to hide the complexity of managing IT systems and reduce the need for human intervention by automating routine infrastructure configuration and management activities that today require a lot of attention from IT professionals. "

The OASIS draft specification BCM (Business Centric Methodology) brings forward the notion that human choice points are needed at times.

If the strategy for reducing the need for human intervention is too blindly pursued, then an overall control system may fail in unpredictable ways.

What we see with the notion (and technology) of independent autonomic managers is a means to lift the "component design and functionality" into a dynamic (but still computational) system with web service interfaces - equipped with the orchestration and discovery capabilities of WS*.

I am conjecturing that two problems are left to the "pragmatics" of specific deployments.

1) The development of a conceptualization of the business (or transaction space) by human (non-IT) stakeholders.

2) The aggregation of a number of such conceptualizations into a common model of a ecosystem (of business entities and interactions)

This is the "origin of design" issue.
