Push and Pull Information Flow

Open discussion ...
I feel inadequate to the task of defining what
"pull" might mean in a future media system. So I ask a small circle of good friends to help me see this
better.
Push and pull are not opposites. Push is far easier to create than pull, and push originally (in
history) came from single (powerful) sources that broadcast out in a one to many
fashion. Pull requires that the pulling agent or person "know" the
entire universe of relevant information (and this is where my concept of a
digital Glass Bead Game (dGBG) or the measurement of the social discourse seems
to be required - but not by the government and not by corporations - this has
to be an open transparent system. (At
least this is how I have figured... and am interested in other's opinions)
If everyone only pushed we would have the current
system. Part of the revolution that has
been talked about involves the ability to allow more sources to broadcast. This discussion was originally about an
in-house film studio with specific cameras that produced content for the web.
As the story unfolded, the details of this web cam were to
change over the year that we have talked.
What remained consistent was the notion that individuals should have
more control over private information spaces.
The issue starts to be "complex" when one
attempts to define an information space... and this is something that several
people in my inner (digital Glass Bead Game) circle are doing PhD thesis on and
other works - including development of scholarly thesis for eventual
publication.
The real relationships between individual self, family,
social units and the world are active; but not easily reified into the agents,
avatars, and "skins" (as David B. just referred to) . Our society does not even have a common
understanding of what might be "Human Mark-up Language" (Rex B. work)
or that there is advanced knowledge of how cognitive processes flow from one
instance to another (with Topic Maps). And ...
...(and) the formative category theory that is likely the
key to real measurement of "right now" (Peter S's work with me).
So how might one actually pull information about products
and information about (say) university type knowledge; given that our society
"seems" not prepared to understand what "information pull
systems/viewpoint might be to each person".
Brad Cox knows, in theory, that economies could be as
dynamic, with high quality information pull systems, as with this constant and
sometimes misleading/harmful, damaging, advertising. The question is how to make the "flip".
No matter what, society will change and this change will
create new industries and leaves old ones behind. Some of the changes, from push only to push-and-pull information
systems, are strongly resisted by the mechanisms of this current advertising
driven economy. It is said (often and
with great authority) that the social world will fall apart without the
constant advertising effort.
Scholarship is needed to understand the impacts of pull
technology and to help the cultural transitions where possible. Brad's work deep frames this
scholarship.
Brad's historical perceptive helps the process of allowing
the individual to see that any new economic system is just a different one from
what we have now, and that a new pull economic system is consistent with his
progressive notions of universal and deep education.
At this point we realize that we are really talking about
being the company that most significantly develops an important bridge to the
new economic and educational systems.
