Community Center and Second School Learning Environments

October 2008
reedited November 3th, 2008

The bridge program has two elements that make it feasible as a national project.  The delivery system is one part, using web based learning systems such as Blackboard.  The second element is a specific learning theory, and the grounding of this learning theory in natural science.  *<*>    The Second School Community centers plans are to develop textbooks, web based modules focused on developmental mathematics and to generalize the work to support teacher training, teacher outreach and the national bridge program.  *<*>

Mission Statement --> ...

We have reviewed and are prepared to discuss the organizational principles that may be used to define the demand side philosophy and the related institutionalization of the second school, both as programs in college and as a not for profit national institution.

The concept of a Second School Community Center is outlined in this first of a series of notes.  This concept proposes a business based approach to altering the outcomes and processes supporting mathematics education.

The concept requires a comprehension of the scope of foundational notes <*> on demand side technology descriptions. A broad spectrum of technology and philosophical innovations are explored in related works. <*>

Capitalization is required to create a single second school location. Parallel with this the Lifting Strategy web based software is being designed and coded.  The "first location" investment is approximately what would be required to establish a franchised retail outlet like a Starbucks coffee shop.

Initially, the requirements for demand side educational practice are related to location and to practice. Location establishes a place where students may go when they discover that demand side learning environments are quite different from supply side environments.

For example, an old fire station two blocks from a major university, in Texas, has been located, and is property that is for sale. The capitalization would establish a community center, including a tea and coffee shop (with expensive teas), a bulk grains center, a reading room with speciality books (religious studies), a full but small bakery and three specially equipped learning rooms.  These rooms would be linked to all other Second School Community Centers and with the National Bridge Program admistrative offices.  There would be a technology office that would handle research contracts in the demand side technology described in the OntologyStream Inc technical papers.  see: * <*> and <*> and <*> and <*>.

Second School professors will be separately accrediated by the National Bridge Program.

Every excuse possible

Because "every excuse possible" may be raised by individuals challenged by demand side theory (see note 9 this index <*>), a specific demand side learning center requires both location and equipment specific to the pedagogy we call the lifting pedagogy. (see note 2 this index <*>).   The issues are related to the self image of the individual and the necessary shift in awareness and idenity needed in case the student has "learned" that they are not a "math person".  see <*>

We note that college faculty also may be deeply committed to supply side theory and practice, even without fully knowing and understanding the consequences.  When this is true, it is often a consequence of a faculty selection process that for several decades have selected faculty members based on agreement with supply side memetics. <*>

Mission statement

It is for this reason that a not for profit foundation has been established with a mission directed at placing a second school location next to every college and university in the United States.

The establishment of these second school locations is designed to undermine the college and university supply side practices, and to establish a proof that graduating seniors from high school may be prepared through an enhancement program lasting as little as four weeks.  The National Bridge Program, whether privately funded or created as a result of a federal program, will serve as the unifying element to the second school system.

The consequence will be to rise the level of performance in the college freshman classes.  Notice that we do not, and will not, compete with the colleges, only undermining the traditional curriculum and pedagogy.

We are hoping to be able to set up the first location this summer (2009), and train the first second school professors.  Second school professors will receive accreditation from an organization that will be evolved for this purpose.  The Lifting Strategy is designed initially for freshman mathematics but it is likely that all disciplines might be addressed.

The current focus is on the bridge period between the system of K-12 education and the college/university freshman level, since this is where the greatest dysfunction and mismatch is now found.

On location and funding

The work I propose is entirely dependent on seed funding, it seems.  A great deal of work has been achieved already.

If seed funding is found, the goal may be to develop a national system assisting high school students make the transition to college level work.   I would like to choose someplace I am personally familiar with like a location next to University of North Texas, University of Texas at Arlington, or University of Texas at Austin (as examples).  A budget is necessary for one year operation, of a community center with coffee and tea shop, and software development supporting the  Bridge Program

Purchase of property would be ideal, as this would allow me to prepare for my retirement within ten years.  I am working the academic year 2008-2009 in Jackson Tennessee and would be interested in establishing a location in Nashville.  Other initially locations would be entirely acceptable.

The essential elements of a location are the teaching environments, two small classroom type settings, and a community center including coffee and tea shop and a small bakery.  It is also possible to have some merchandise such as books, study supplies, or even commodities of an appropriate type.

The community center may have a separate cost center.  However, it would deliver to the second school learning environments a home and a place within a local community.

The community center and second school learning environments could be placed into a commercial space like one sees in a shopping center, similar to how Starbucks designs a franchise  location, or a house or building may be purchased and transformed. The location should be within easy walking distance of a college or university.
