| The SecondSchool ™. A student’s pre-college learning experience does not always prepare for college. In fact, slow and generally un-insightful instruction may result in an acquired learning disability. This conjecture is based on a two decade study of the mechanisms involved in learning. If the conjecture is correct then a disability is developed over time through adaptation. The origins are found in cultural practices in education today. ![]() ![]() A discussion between two students
A Proposed Solution The solution to this problem is to shift responsibility for leaning a curriculum to the individual student. This may be done in the “presence” of a focus topic representation of a standard curriculum. We offer on-line and classroom instruction using focus topic frameworks. This instruction is held in virtual worlds, as well as in classroom. Knowledge Technology The underlying theory is called demand theory since each individual student comes to demand specific instruction on specific topics. The central purpose of “demand pedagogy” is to renew the natural ability to be self-directed and to provide new tools to the individual. Social network software like Twitter and Facebook and U-Tube are used to define community. Demand technology generalizes these software systems, while remaining open source and thus free or low cost. This is done in a virtual world that is easy to get into and learn how to move around. The Education Bridge is proposed as a national public sector virtual world infrastructure, designed to aid high school students prepare for college. ![]() SecondSchool Community Center, prototype
A SecondSchool Community Center is to be a bricks and mortar business having the mission to support the Education Bridge. The first of these is located in Montpelier Vermont. ![]() There is a lack of understanding about the process involved in watering down curriculums. When challenged, students form two groups; those who see the point of self directed study and those who do not. Students who find self directed study exciting and uplifting have in the past found little external support to express this view. Middle school education creates pressure on students, as instruction is leveled. A downward spiral is created both by our educational system as well as a system focused on consumerism. Demand Pedagogy ™ The core concept in demand pedagogy is that a student should learn how to learn. Focus Topics for Courses of Study In SecondSchool short courses, individual students are assisted, sometimes working within groups, to discover the curriculum associated with any course of study. Individual topics are examined at three levels of comprehension. In our work these three levels are 1) Deep comprehension or theory 2) Notation or terminology and 3) Illustration with examples. The Curriculum For web design, we assist the individual in creating a web site and understanding the underlying technology. The principles of knowledge management are focused on best practices when combined with a theory of stratification. Web design and social networking are useful to adults who wish to create and maintain their own web site, and manage social networks. This is the recommended first course Current curriculums include: College preparatory A) Set theory and probability B) Arithmetic in bases other than base ten C) Linear and Quadratic Equations in bases other than base ten Short Courses B, C, and D are college preparatory. Web based skill and knowledge D) Web design and social networking E) Building Virtual Worlds using RealXtend F) Principles of Knowledge Management G) Architectural Design in Virtual Worlds Architectural design in Virtual Worlds is supportive of the proposed Education Bridge RealXTend speeds up the development of global standardized 3D virtual world infrastructure. The SecondSchool community center ™ The SecondSchool community center has a social function. A bakery, coffee and tea ship as well as a retail space is part of how these community centers will be developed. The community centers are designed to engage parents and students in a supplement to school and college. New curriculum will be developed and taught in both Virtual World and classroom settings. The Education Bridge is designed with a new architectural design based on service-oriented architecture, and the principles that create localized control over e-governance, protects intellectual property - and a few other things. Renewal of the American family farming ecosystem What is possible is that immersive Virtual Worlds, even as they are currently configured, may be used to model how new innovations might be shared and used to create wealth for small family or individually owned farms. The issues are well known. ) e-governance as applied through virtual worlds for farming co-ops 2) e-education using new individually centric learning strategies 3) natural science unification with computing simulations using organizational stratification 4) decentralization of energy and commodity use and production using next generation immersive Virtual Worlds (iVWs) 5) renewal of the agricultural base for democratic governance, including in the United States. A meeting on The Education Bridge, in Second Life, is scheduled each Sunday. Modeling building and grid infrastructure There is also interest in the BIM and POP (Building Information Models) and (Process Ontology Protocol) file integration within a tool set like Google SkectchUp. These tools are needed if we are to model large farming ecosystems with standardized components. A separate meeting time and location is needed for this group. ![]()
